Launch Services Database to Speed Up My Mac

The Mac OS X operating system uses the Launch Services Database which keeps track of all applications and what kind of files they can open. Unfortunately, sometimes, these launch services database get out of sync or its cache gets corrupted. This may slow down your processor, adding time to initiate a file or application.
To fix problems like this, you can force launch services to rebuild its database; there are several ways to do this. Many system maintenance tools include tasks for rebuilding the launch service database.
If you want to try it yourself, you can attempt to rebuild the database yourself. Of course you should backup the database first and do your own research. (In other words, reader beware.) To rebuild the database yourself, from Terminal run the following command (needs to be one line):
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/
Support/lsregister
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Running this on your machine, could yield a drop in the lsregister dump of up to 20 - 30 percent. Not hard to see that this should probably be a regular maintenance activity, especially for developers.

IMPORTANT Before running the Launch Services Rebuilder, first save any open documents, quit all applications, and log out of all other user accounts on the system.

Which files should I delete to Clean Up My Mac

Removing unused applications that are rarely used , is certainly a nice way to clean up Mac hard drive and get some free space , but before this some other files must be deleted first to yield some good results as well. The files that usually come with your computer come under this category. We'll highlight the most common ones and suggest how you can find them on your machine.

Language Files

My Mac came with loads of Language files so that I can choose the language I want for my OS-operating system. It makes sense for Apple to do it this way allowing them to ship just one version of the operating system worldwide. However, you will probably use just one or two languages, the rest are unnecessary.
This is something you can only do once, but still Language files are good option for deletion. Language files can live in several places inside your System folders (OS X and OS 9) as well as inside Applications folders so you may want a helping hand. A software tool like Stellar Speed Up Mac has a Language File Finder that not only finds all the Language files on your Mac for you, but it can also delete language files to avail some more space on Mac hard drive.

Delete Unused Files

Along the same lines as the Language , there could be lots of other files that you haven't opened or used in a long time. It may take a little more time to investigate just what they are before you act on them, but if you haven't accessed them in over 2 years thre is a strong possibility that you can clean them out.
One way to identify unused files you may be able to delete from your system is to sort through them based on how often you have used them. Stellar Speed Up Mac has a feature called Clean My Mac that lets you do exactly that, search for files last accessed (opened) within a particular time period.

Remove Duplicate files, Empty Folders, Broken Aliases

We may not know exactly how they happen, but they happen. Empty folders don't really take up hard disk space, but they can slow down a search when you ook for something on your Mac. Aliases that have lost sight of the application or folder they were pointing to are just wasting space, so it would be nice to fix them or dump them. And there may be files on your system that are duplicates meaning they either have the same name or their content is identical.
None of these types of files are a huge problem, but it's just another small opportunity to really put a bow on your cleaning efforts. These three culprits are not so easy to sniff out on your own, so you should check out the tools in Stellar Speed Up Mac to delete duplicate files that allow you to swoop in and get rid of these pests.

Stellar Mac Utility Software

Mac OS X is more reliable than other Mac operating systems. It provides advanced security features, which make it more authentic OS. The Mac claims to be completely free from viruses and other bad programs. It enables you to store your valuable data on internal hard drive as well as removable storage devices.
But, user errors, data structures corruption, and improper system shutdown are some of the problems that can affect even this powerful operating system and cause serious problems of data loss. In such cases, a complete and valid backup proves great help. However, there is no backup in place or it is not updated, Mac data recovery becomes need of hour.
But its a good news taht it is possible to retrieve lost data from your Mac-supported storage media, because actually the file is not removed completely from the media until it is being overwritten. Only the file system entry of particular file or directory is removed and the file or directory remains intact, until the operating system allocates this space to any other file. In such situations, a good Mac recovery software like Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery, helps you to completely analyze the drive, repair the damage, and retrieve data.
Stellar Phoenix Mac performs recovery of your valuable data from affected storage media using below three steps:
  • Analyze- First of all, the software analyze the damage to your hard drive and performs absolute scan of entire drive to find out lost files, folders, and volumes. Disk scanning is carried out using high-end scanning techniques. The scanning process of this data recovery Mac utility is extremely fast and advanced.
  • Repair- After analyzing the problem, the software fixes the damage and extract data from problem media. It has interactive graphical user interface and thus you need not to have sound technical skills to use this software for recovery. It recognizes almost all popular file formats and also enables you to add a file format, as per your requirements.
  • Recovery- After successful completion of the above process, software lists down all the recoverable files, directories, and volumes for actual recovery. You can recover all or required files to desired location on your hard drive, removable media, or any network mapped drive.
The analyze and repair options are also available in free demo version of this Mac disk recovery software. The trial version lists and previews all recoverable files. However, you need to purchase full version of the software to actually recover the data.
The Stellar has also launched a new Mac utility software to Speed Up Mac performance. This SpeedUp Mac software deletes duplicate files from Mac hard drive to improve Mac speed.

Speed Up Mac - Tips for everyone

Ways to increase Mac speed
Some Mac users have to run 8 to 10 applications all at the time (and sometimes more). This often makes the mac machine run sluggish.

Sometimes even a single restart may fix the issue. When this doesn't speed up mac then there are a number of things we can do to rejuvinate the mac machine. Here are few tips I find helpfull for speed up mac without spending any money.
1. Clean the Startup Items
Some applications automatically set themselves as a "startup item", and open at every restart or login. You can find out what is in your startup items list by navigating to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Simply select and remove them carefully.
2. Turn off the applications for Universal Access, Bluetooth, Speech Recognition, etc if these are none of your use.
Putting the unused applications off saves your RAM and ultimately increase mac speed.
3. Disable the 'Other' System Preferences
Please note that in the bottom section of your System Preferences window there is a label "Other". If the user doesn't use it often then its suggested to disable it (either turn it "off" within the Preference Pane itself or remove it from the folder "~/Library/PreferencePanes").
4. Please Check the 'build' of your software
If a user is running an Intel Mac, some of the software may be running under the "Rosetta" translator, which allows to run an applications on an Intel chip which are built for a PowerPC processor. Note that Rosetta is of course an efficient tool , but don't use it untill its necessary. There are patches for many applications which upgrade them to a "universal build". By making sure you're running the latest version you can be confident you're not using Rosetta unnecessarily.
5. Clean out unnecessary code
With both being options ie; PowerPC or Intel processor, the recent software come programmed for both. But you don't need optimization for both - you only need optimization your Mac PC. There are utilities to strip out unnecessary code and save hard drive space.
Editor's note: If a user is migrating to Intel from PowerPC Mac, he might want to defer "slimming" the programs until he has made the switch. Otherwise all the programs slimmed for PowerPC will be running under Rosetta on your Intel Mac - unless you take the time to do a fresh installation.
6. Get rid of languages and translations you won't use
There are very rare chances that a mac user works on different languages other than than the prefered ones. And even if he does, he can strip out the other languages not being used and can speed up mac machine.
7. Keep an eye on Activity Monitor
There are many applications still sucking up RAM. How can we know about them?
The Apple's Activity Monitor, which comes with OS X. tells us about CPU usage, RAM requirements, virtual memory usage, and whether a given application is a PowerPC or Intel (Universal) build. Have a regular look of it .
8. Clean off your hard drive
Usually we don't clean our trash. Check it today , it may make some hard drive space free.
Please note that Mac OS X (and the Classic Mac OS, too) uses the free space on your hard drive as "virtual memory", and it depends heavily on that virtual memory to run efficiently. If your Mac PC is running sluggish, that may be due to lack of some required hard drive. I would suggest to go for Stellar Speedup Mac for ding this task in a very efficient manner.
9. Run Speed up Mac
Its an efficient , fast and affordable mac utility software for increasing the speed of Mac machine by removing all the above unnecessary applications or items.
