When we simply trash an application, it may not get removed completely. There remain some leftovers and with the passage of time such files get accumulated on drive and consume too much of necessary space. It can be a reason of low memory in boot volume because trash bin is part of the same. This situation could result in slow speed of Mac.

To regain the drive space and remove unused applications completely, one can use Stellar Speed Up Mac. Its a Mac cleanup tool to create free space on Mac drive by removing unnecessary files like cache, duplicate files , Log files, system junks, universal binaries and unnecessary applications installed in your Mac.

SSD improves system performance because of its faster read/write speed. Users of latest generation Macbook Air will accept the fact of massive speed SSDs. Although Macbook Air has constraints in terms of Ram and Processor but still SSDs can give them blistering start up times of under 15 seconds.

Reclaim some space on Hard Disk

There are many users who keep storing everything from A to Z on their drive whether its important or not. There rises a condition when drive gets close to its capacity and system performance starts dipping considerably. While running some program, the OS X cleverly uses Hard Disk space as Virtual memory, in addition to actual RAM. An about to full hard disk and low RAM may cause an extremely slow Mac. The best way to reclaim space on hard drive using some Mac cleaning tool like Stellar Speed Up Mac. Its an easy to use tool to clean all unnecesary stuffs – both data and applcations from your Mac drive.

RAM

RAM plays a very vital role in enhancing system performance so, it cannot be neglected. If you can afford RAM upgradation the you can do the single biggest thing to speed up OS X performance.

Reduce the number of Login items

Login items may be helpful but they can affect boot up times and often consume necessary resources while unused. This can become even more of a problem if you have Auto resume enabled.

Are your Applications compatible ?

Many users performance issues stem from software or utilities that are out of date or haven’t been optimised for Lion. Check that your apps are compatible using this handy App Compatibility Table.

Now-a-days, similar questions are being asked by Mountain Lion users who are facing a slow performance of their Mac. Here we are discussing some tips to improve Mac speed.

When we launch an application, the OS uses physical memory (RAM) to play it. More the number of applications we launch, more it will consume the RAM. Mac performance (Mac OS X 10.8 - Mountain Lion) can be raised by cleaning Mac drive. Here we are discussing some very effective methods to Speed Up Mac.

  • Make your trash empty

How to Speed up Mountain Lion | Ways for speeding up Mountain Lion

Tips to Speed up Mountain Lion performance:
Mac OS X 10.8 - Mountain Lion is Apple’s latest Mac operating system, considered to be better, faster and more advanced than Mac Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), but users are facing issues w.r.t its performance and startup. There are various tips and tricks to improve Mountain Lion performance and here we are discussing some of them.

1. Add memory to your Mac

For any computer, memory enhancement is one of the most effective ways to improve performance. This is because the RAM is required to run an application. So, more the number of apps you open , more the memory is consumed. Technically, Mountain Lion requires only 2 GB of memory to run, but practically, it’s not enough. You must increase, specially when you work with large applications , upto 4 GB. The Macbook Air users should note that unfortunately, memory cannot be upgraded at their device because it’s soldered onto the motherboard.

2. Get some free space on disk

The users should keep it in mind that your Mac must need free space at least 5% of total size of disk so as to run applications properly. Sufficient amount of disk space supports running multiple applications simultaneously. The OS uses free space on drive as virtual memory when the physical memory be insufficient. Deleting unnecessary data or compressing them can reclaim free space on disk. You can also opt for removing old or unused applications. Stellar SpeedUp Mac is the tool, you can use to cleanup your Mac drive.

3. Switch to SSD (Solid State Drive)

An SSD and an HDD with same capacity will have have different performance. An HDD performs slower than an SSD.
If you install an SSD, there are several options:
  1. Get an SSD for your machine and clean installation of Mountain Lion, followed by an optional Time Machine restore of your files, folders and apps (or just re-download them through the app store)
  2. Connect the SSD via USB (most models come with a SATA to USB adaptor) and create a clone of your existing drive on it.

4. Trim the number of Dock items

The Dock items consume your resources so, its suggested to have minimum number of items so as to save useful resources.
Follow these steps:
1. Open System Preferences and choose Dock
2. Select Scale effect under the Minimise windows using setting
3. Uncheck Animate opening applications

5. Close Unnecessary Widgets

Dashboard widgets are small apps that reduce your efforts but consume the necessary resources as well. It eat the memory even though it’s hidden out of the way. A good way to reclaim resources is close down those which you don’t use.

6. Disable Startup Items

It apps which get launched automatically at the time of startup, are called startup items. Its quite obvious that at every startup, the system would seek for more RAM. The trouble is that as you add more and more to the list, things will start becoming sluggish and ultimately a slow Mac startup.
The best way to resolve the issue is to reduce the number of items in starup list. Go to Users & Groups -> select your user account -> choose the Login Items . Here you can remove any apps that you don't need at startup.

7. Perform Clean Install of Mountain Lion

If you’ve upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion please check if your Lion itself was upgraded from Snow Leopard.
Snow Leopard -> Mac Lion -> Mountain Lion
Since, multiple upgrades can also be a major cause of slow down in Mac performance. So, it is always suggested to have a clean install to get the best of Mountain Lion.
# The fact depends on number of apps you have installed, you r machine's hardware and disk size.

8. Disk Maintenance and Optimisation

How to Speed up Mountain Lion ? This is the question which can be answered very easily. Not only Mountain Lion users but users of previous versions also, can maintain and keep their disk optimized. It’s recommended to have a regular check for any disk permission errors.
This can be done via Disk Utility. You should verify your disk and if everything is OK with a confirmation message, then its fine else, use the Repair Disk option.
